Morrison supports plan addressing sexual harassment in Springfield

SPRINGFIELD - State Senator Julie Morrison (D – Deerfield) released the following statement this afternoon after supporting three proposals aimed at addressing sexual harassment in Springfield:

“Today’s action by the General Assembly represents an important first step in addressing the serious issue of sexual harassment in Illinois politics. Our laws and policies should be crafted to give a voice to victims. Unfortunately, both our laws and the culture in Springfield denied justice to victims. While today represents progress, we must continue the discussion on how to end sexual harassment in our state.”

The Senate passed three provisions today, including:

• Senate Bill 402 that will address a current gap in state law that limits the Legislative Ethics Commission from making a ruling on a sexual harassment complaint or imposing penalties against state officials, including members of the legislature;
• House Bill 137 that will allow the newly-appointed Legislative Inspector General to investigate formal complaints past the current one-year limitation;
• House Joint Resolution 83 that publicly acknowledges the issue of sexual harassment in Illinois politics and urges a change in the culture that allows such behavior; and
• Senate Resolution 1076 that creates a task force that will examine legislative changes to maximize protections for those victimized by sexual discrimination and harassment.

All four proposals passed the General Assembly this afternoon.

Morrison expresses shock with upcoming gun fundraiser

SPRINGFIELD – State Senator Julie Morrison (D – Deerfield) was appalled this morning when she read news that the Lake County Republicans are holding a gun raffle this Friday during a political fundraiser.

“Just ten days after the mass shooting in Las Vegas, Lake County Republicans are auctioning off semi-automatic rifles and military style weapons,” Morrison said. “Not only is this event in bad taste, weapons should not be auctioned at political fundraisers.”

Morrison is calling on all political organizations to suspend raffles of firearms at political events.

Morrison introducing ban on bump stocks, pressing forward on assault weapon ban

SPRINGFIELD – In the wake of the deadly mass shooting in Las Vegas earlier this week, State Senator Julie Morrison (D – Deerfield) announced today she is filing legislation to ban “trigger modification devices” such as “bump stocks,” which are attachments to semiautomatic rifles that drastically increase the number of bullets fired from a weapon.

“Bump stocks serve no purpose but to inflict maximum carnage on a target and have no place in our communities,” Morrison said. “The federal loophole allowing bump stocks is essentially giving the green light for individuals to purchase and unfortunately use weapons that act just like a fully automatic weapon – which has been banned in this country since 1986.”

While Morrison is hopeful action is taken in Washington to regulate bump stocks, history has proven Congress seems unable to pass common-sense gun regulations to deal with increased mass shooting events.
